As early as the 16th century, when the first Europeans
ventured into what is now east Mississippi, the Choctaw
people had developed a strong economy based on communal
ownership and doing business with others. Today, the Mississippi
Band of Choctaw Indians is a federally recognized, self-governing
Indian tribe with 9,500 enrolled members, most of whom live
on or near the Tribe’s 35,000-acre Reservation in east central
Mississippi. We own and operate a diversified portfolio
of manufacturing, service, retail and tourism enterprises.
Currently, our manufacturing portfolio includes six manufacturing
companies in five Mississippi counties. Our customers include
McDonald’s, American Greetings, Club Car, Delphi Packard,
Caterpillar, Bergstrom and Ford Power Products. A recent
study by Mississippi State University discovered that the
Tribe was responsible for the creation of more than 15,000
permanent jobs that earn in excess of $380 million in annual
payroll. Future economic initiatives include our entrance
into a variety of high tech fields, further diversification
of our existing product lines and the continued expansion
of our resort attractions.
In 1994, the Tribe opened the Silver Star Hotel & Casino,
representing the Tribe’s entry into the hospitality industry.
The property proved to be an overwhelming success, and underwent
five expansions in five years that currently attracts approximately
3.2 million tourists annually. The Tribe diversified its
resort amenities in 1997 with the opening of Dancing Rabbit
Golf Club, which now contains two 18-hole, championship
golf courses designed by Tom Fazio and Jerry Pate.
Demand for the resort continued to exceed the supply, prompting
the creation of the Choctaw Resort Development Enterprise
to oversee the development and operations of all Resort
amenities. The Enterprise has developed a detailed master
plan for the creation of the Pearl River Resort that will
be encompass over 2,000-acres of tribal property. Upon completion,
the Pearl River Resort will include 2 Las Vegas-styled casinos,
1100+ hotel rooms, 2 Top-100 golf courses, a 300-acre recreational
lake, conference hotel, water park, specialty retail shops,
and more than 15 restaurants, among others.
In 2001, the Choctaw Resort Development Enterprise successfully
issued $200 million in bond financing that was received
enthusiastically by Wall Street investors. Proceeds will
be used to develop Phase I of the Pearl River Resort expansion
including the construction of the Golden Moon Hotel & Casino
which is expected to open in 2002.
