On behalf of the Choctaw people, as the Tribal Chief, I would like to welcome you as you begin to explore our rich and vibrant culture and the many life-ways that identify us as Choctaw. Whether you are an old friend of ours or a new acquaintance whom we are just now having an opportunity to meet, we welcome you.

I am humbled and deeply honored to serve as the fourth Tribal Chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians since our tribe received Federal recognition in 1945. A significant first at Choctaw, Mississippi, is the fact that I am the first female Tribal Chief to be duly elected by the Choctaw people in the Tribe's history. I was sworn into Office in October 2011, and am truly excited to have this opportunity to serve during the coming four years. We are experiencing a refreshing new day, a new beginning at Choctaw that is radiant with hope, promise, encouragement, inclusiveness, and most importantly, Choctaw Unity, which is a very positive source of our strength as Choctaw people.

As one of the United States' original first nations, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians is the only Federally-recognized American Indian tribe living within the State of Mississippi. We are 10,000 members strong. Our Choctaw lands cover over 35,000 acres in ten different counties in Mississippi. Providing permanent, full-time jobs for over 5,000 Tribal-member and non-Indian employees, the Tribe is a major contributor to the state's economy. Chief Anderson Receives Woman of the Year Award

Tribal Chief Phyliss J. Anderson received the 2013 Political/State and Local Government Woman of the Year Award from the Mississippi Commission on the Status of Women, at a celebration held at the Mississippi Museum of Art on Thursday, May 9, 2013. In the picture above celebrating the honor with Chief Anderson is Bogue Chitto Tribal Councilwoman Doris Thompson (left) and Crystal Ridge Tribal Councilwoman Ann Wesley (right).
