Nanih Waiya Returned
On Friday November 14, 2008, Nanih Waiya (the traditional birth place of the Choctaws) was returned to the tribe. Miko Denson and guests addressed a 1000 member audience on this special occasion. After 178 years, the MBCI regained the mother mound from the State of Mississippi. The celebration was held at the Nanih Waiya Cave. The event included Choctaw traditional dancing and storytelling.
In 1830, the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek ceded Nanih Waiya and 11 million acres to the United States. The treaty was the largest peace time land exchange signed between an American Indian nation and the United States. The treaty stipulated 22 terms addressing land exchange, protectorate status, annuities, citizenship, transportation, educational improvement, and Choctaw delegates in American government.
